2019 Fellows with featured guest speaker Jared Chung of CareerVillage.org

Delta Analytics welcomed our 2019 class of Data Fellows in January. Our teams this year are tackling machine learning and analytics challenges across 10 nonprofit partners. Read on to learn more!

CareerVillage

Delta Team: Erik Burd (Project Lead), Chong Geng, Harrison Li

We are excited to be working with CareerVillage (CV) for a second year! (CV) is a San Francisco based nonprofit whose mission is to democratize access to career advice and guidance for underserved youth by building a platform that connects experienced professionals with students interested in pursuing that career. CV also provides additional services through their partners in especially underserved communities. The Delta team has been tasked with improving CV’s ability to match student questions with the right professionals.

LitLab

Delta Team: Maria Corella (Project Lead), Karla Leibowitz, Jenny Trieu, Charlotte Borgognoni

LitLab is a nonprofit that offers direct service programs to serve their mission of building a strong foundation for young learners. They offer literacy resources for use by educators and parents in the form of Kidappolis which serves as a learning platform for children. The Delta Analytics team’s goal is to enable data driven decision making through the development of a dashboard visualizing key usage metrics.

Tarjimly

Team: Thomas Vetterli (Project Lead), Arman Madani, Terence Tam, Ugaso Sheikh-Abdi

Tarjimly builds and operates a platform that matches volunteer translators with refugees and aid workers that require translation. The platform has successfully connected over 9,000 volunteer translators to over 17,000 aid workers and refugees to provide on demand services. The Delta team is working with Tarjimly to improve their matching algorithms and provide more reliable service through the app.

Open Media Foundation

Team: Hariharan Mohanraj, Peter Adelson, Soumyajit Paul, Fianna Leibowitz O’Brien

We are excited to welcome back Open Media Foundation (OMF) for a second year and second project with us! The Open Media Foundation provides trainings and tools to enable greater civic engagement. As part of their efforts to improve local government transparency, OMF has collected and transcribed local government meetings which are available via their API. The Delta team last year built an autotagging system to make these meeting transcripts more searchable. This year, the team has been tasked with building interactive visualizations which will make identifying topics and meetings of interest even easier.

Dost Education

Team: Andrew Boxley (Project Lead), Maria Ilie, Colin Swords, Iris Huang

Dost Education’s mission is to empower parents in impoverished areas of India with ways to enrich their children’s early learning opportunities. Dost accomplishes this by delivering audio content to their mobile phones. The audio content contains suggested exercises to integrate into day to day activities for children to assist in their development. The Delta team is building dashboards and metrics to provide Dost with additional insight into their use behavior.

Wordnik

Team: Helen Fan (Project Lead), Graham McAlister, Wei Zhi Cheung, Cindy S Tseng

Wordnik is the world’s largest English language online dictionary! The Delta team is working on improving the ability for Wordnik to recommend related words outside of definition based similarity or semantics (e.g. synonyms, antonyms). The improved recommendation system will also suggest words based on other users’ search trends.

Child Trends

Team: Yuan Fei (Project Lead), Richard McGowan, Tony Wu, Mingyue Alice Dai, Ryan Atkinson

Child Trends is the leading nonprofit research organization focused on improving the lives and prospects of children, youth, and their families. Child Trends maintains a databank that tracks various indicators of child and family well-being including Educational Attainment and Foster Care. Their project with Delta Analytics involves analyzing data collected by the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative on interventions for foster care youth. The Delta team will be delivering dashboards that will be used by program administrators to help assess the impact of the interventions.

Glide

Team: Mimi Tam (Project Lead), Jasmine Joung, Sriya Srinath, Divya Sharma

Glide is a San Francisco based nonprofit that works to address the needs of San Francisco’s homeless and marginalized communities. Glide’s team administers a number of programs including daily free meals, a legal clinic, and health services to those it serves. The Delta team will be working with Glide to develop metrics to better track the impact that their programs have on breaking the cycle of homelessness.

IFF

Team: Clemens Pilgram (Project Lead), Justin Rezende, Evan Bell, Claire Mason, Camille Liu

IFF is a Chicago based nonprofit which provides real estate development services such as financing for other nonprofits. Their clients include charter schools, affordable housing developers, and women’s shelters. The Delta team is working with IFF to model IFF’s lending portfolio with the goal of predicting which loans are likely to close. This will allow IFF to better allocate their capital and lending practices.

Learning Equality

Team: Michelle Muha (Project Lead), Harrison Nguyen, Julie Wang, Funmilayo Ilesanmi, Stephen Chu

Learning Equality is dedicated to bringing educational resources to those around the world. Learning Equality accomplishes this by deploying Kolibri, an offline application that allows educators to use and distribute curriculums and content from sources such as Khan Academy. The Delta team is building dashboards and user interface to enable Learning Equality and its Kolibri administrators to extract insights from how students progress through curriculums.

Thanks to Our Volunteers and Supporters

As always, our programs would not be possible without all the volunteers who work on the projects and organize our programs. It is a testament to the spirit of volunteerism that our Fellows and organizers choose to dedicate their energy outside of their full time obligations towards a mission of Data for Good. We would also like to thank our partners at the University of San Francisco Data Institute who have generously contributed space and resources to make our programs possible. We are excited to see what our teams are able to accomplish this year!
