This July, Delta Analytics will be wrapping up its 2023 Data Fellowship! This year, our Fellowship was a hybrid program between in-person in downtown San Francisco and remote volunteering. We had 6 clients tackling diverse issues such as ocean sustainability, agriculture, and tech education, and projects from dashboards, ML models, to data engineering.

In this article, we’ll talk about this year’s clients, the projects, and introduce the Delta teams!

FishWise

FishWise is a nonprofit that works to sustain ocean ecosystems and the people who depend on them by transforming global seafood supply chains. FishWise works closely alongside industry partners and a growing network of experts to understand and address environmental sustainability and human rights issues in seafood supply chains.

[UPDATE] Delta Analytics worked with FishWise to build a dashboard that visualizes Human Rights Risk (HRR) indicators on fishing vessels to enable geographic analysis and reporting of HRR violations.

myAgro

myAgro is a nonprofit that empowers smallholder farmers with self-financing and agricultural services to reduce poverty and increase food security. While myAgro started by pioneering the use of mobile layaway, it has quickly evolved into an enterprise that provides comprehensive support to smallholder farmers on every level to increase their yields and income.

Analytics worked with myAgro to build models to both forecast farmers’ demand for a wide variety of agricultural products and identify farmers who may be unable to reach their season’s savings target. The models will enable myAgro to reduce excess procurement from their upstream vendors, streamline their delivery logistics, and better target support to at-risk clients.

Sky’s The Limit

Sky’s the Limit is a nonprofit that empowers underrepresented, young entrepreneurs to achieve their business dreams through volunteer mentoring, training, and funding via their digital platform. The organization serves entrepreneurs coming from many backgrounds including low-income, women, and people of color.

[UPDATE] Delta Analytics worked with Sky’s the Limit to optimize their digital platform by creating reports and dashboards to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of the relationship-building journey from registration through milestone completion, and collaborated on recommendations for future platform improvements.

Team: Jeff Dillon (Project Lead), Pam He, Darrel Hanich, Christopher Fallon

TeenSmart

TeenSmart International is a nonprofit that promotes healthy lifestyles & self-leadership in teens through free online services to empower them to make smart decisions, live healthy lives and contribute to their communities. TeenSmart aims to prevent and/or reduce high-risk behaviors that often are established in adolescence, persisting in adulthood with high costs to society. This is TeenSmart’s third project with Delta Analytics!

Delta built on the work from last year’s project, which developed predictive models to identify a young person’s probability to engage in high-risk behaviors. Delta developed a complete AWS ML pipeline to train and operationalize models and to analyze predictions and model performance.

Team: Jeff Gunderson (Project Lead), Jai Miles, Silvia Nunez Gomez, Brahmani Thota, Yuani Chen

CodeNation

Code Nation is a nonprofit that equips students in under-resourced high schools with the skills, experiences, and connections to access careers in technology through the efforts of hundreds of volunteer technology professionals. Code Nation seeks to break deep-seated social and economic inequities in the tech industry.

Delta Analytics worked with Code Nation to adopt a commercial data pipeline solution and build dashboards to assess program effectiveness and monitor program key performance indicators (KPIs).

Team: Patrick Rogers (Project Lead), Felicia Wang, Page Uriarte

Angel Flight West

Angel Flight West is a nonprofit, volunteer organization that arranges free, non-emergency air transportation for children and adults with serious medical conditions and other compelling needs, such as domestic violence or natural disasters. Volunteer pilots fly their own aircraft at no cost to passengers or agencies requesting these services.

Delta Analytics worked with AFW to investigate modeling a volunteer pilot’s attrition rate based on their volunteer profile completed upon application. While this project did not result in a successful predictive model, the team identified features that may be used for marketing insights and provided potential ideas for future data collection.

Team: Prudvi Gaddam (Project Lead), Kevin Barth, Vivian Sun, Han Zhang, Sandya Wijaya
